Shiny Piece of Metal

(First Blog post from J.D.)

It’s a piece of metal.

Sure, it can be shiny. Sure, it can be colorful. For the most part they are round but now days they can be almost any shape.

What is it about these coins and medallions that makes them so desired, so valued? I feel it is because each coin, every medallion, represents something to someone. I am fairly certain there are not enough electrons in this world to completely explain what that ‘something to someone’ is here on this blog post but suffice it to say it is different for all.

I can tell you what that something is if I am the someone in question though. My personal collection is rather puny compared to others I see brought for display at events be it Mega or local. Thinking about it I came to realize that is because my ‘something’ is a timeline. My collection represents where I have been, when it was, and who I was with. Unlike the corresponding T-shirts, my coins are not starting to fade and wear and will soon become unpresentable.

Then there is the other me, the one that arranges coins and medallions to be made to your specifications.

Maybe you are a group, a club, an organization, or just you. The actual collection is more nebulous - a sample of the final version, a sample colored differently from the final version, or no sample at all but just a picture.

The only light of day this collection sees is a display in our office or on trays at an event or show we are vending at. Still, each one means something to me. The story behind the making of the coin and the people involved. I will admit it is sorta cool when the images of the coin start hitting social media followed by comments like “Gotta have it!”. That’s an easy Like from me.
